Creating Screencasts for transparent 365/24/7 student support

You are recording what is on the screen.
If you can get "it" to appear on the screen, it can be recorded. Audio can be recorded with the video or added afterward.

• Example screencasts (free for all with comments)

  • Khan Academy - author is only heard and writes using a graphics tablet.
  • Vicki Hart - (math doodling) - document camera, hear author and see the authors hand as she writes on paper.Note speed up of video and overlay of audio.
  • _ - Notes: videos of a teacher presenting on a board -not a screencast
  • Mathematica Demonstrations - not a screencast, but a constructed dynamic interactive virtual manipulative
  • Mathcasts - Watch a 5 minute presentation about mathcasts
  • GeoGebra casts - vast teachers screencasts on many topics
  • pencasts - smartpen synchronized audio/video - such as the Livescribe Pulse or Livescribe Echo smartpens
  • Interactive WhiteBoard (IWB) - captures - are effectively screencasts, but the screen is the IWB.
  • Cross Product (math) - done with PowerPoint animation and screencast'ed.
  • many splash screens have small introductory screencasts of their product(s) - easier to watch, listen, and learn rather then read

• Questions

  • Why? -
    • supports a flipped classroom - lesson is in the cloud
    • store your novel work -or- archive students' work. It is not just simple screen snapshots of still images. Screencasts are audio, video, written, visual explanations.
  • When? - anytime, but do not record material that is already done (stop wasting your time)
  • Where? - anywhere with minimal hardware
  • How? - we will learn/practice this
